It will assist about 2million South Africans living with conditions that affect their hearing or eyesight.
The training programme will also help those who battle to integrate themselves into society and to obtain skills and jobs.
It combines in-class computer-based teaching with homework using the same manuals as those used in the classroom.
Students can pace their work independently in line with their abilities. At the end of each level of the course, they then choose whether to write an Independent Examination Board Exam for their certification.
The programme enables Blind and Deaf adults to progress to NQF Level 1, which is equivalent to Grade 9 - and provides them with the basis from which to access further education. The first group of disabled adults are putting the programme to the test at the Wits School of Education, Johannesburg.
The programme is endorsed by the Deaf Federation of South Africa (DeafSA) and it is compliant with the United English Braille Code.
