A 47-year-old man is expected to appear in the Vereeniging magistrate's court today on a charge of perjury after he allegedly lied to police that he was hijacked.

Police spokesman Captain Shado Mashobane said the man went to Vereeniging police station yesterday and reported that two armed men had robbed him of his car in the Bedworth Park suburb.

"The man said one of the thugs pointed a firearm at him and ordered him out of the car.

"He claimed the alleged hijackers drove towards Vereeniging," said Mashobane.

But police said the man's Nissan bakkie had been left unattended to at Bedworth Park on Saturday. A security guard even alerted police about it.

Mashobane yesterday said police went to the spot where the man claimed he was hijacked and found his car intact.

He said police were informed that the man was drunk and had been sleeping in his car.

When he woke up, he went to the police station to lay a false charge, said Mashobane.
