Collective effort needed to fight crime scourge

The brutal murder of Lucky Dube is a clear sign that crime requires a collective effort. It's even worse if the suspects' vehicle was seen several times loitering around the scene of the crime.

This is not the first nor last time that a fellow South African will be killed by known criminals.

Apartheid was defeated by a collective effort. Everyone believed and had the conviction to fight apartheid. People were willing to risk their lives to end apartheid. Currently, our country is held hostage by HIV-Aids and crime. Both challenges have a serious effect on the social fabric of our society and the country's future.

Society can do something about this. We can make a huge difference if we take this upon ourselves. The question is what can we do? Radio 702 has provided a simple but effective solution. Their crime line only costs R1 per SMS and no one will ever know who you are when you phone.

I personally have confidence in the system.

This is the communitytaking steps to ensure that we get rid of the criminals in our midst and feel safe in our own home. Right now no matter what kind of system you have in place, you still feel unsafe.

My plea is to follow the 702 example. It's a battle we can win but it needs a collective effort.

We should stop pointing fingers at the government and act now.
