Police have arrested five men in connection with the brutal killing last Thursday night of reggae star, Lucky Dube.
Police made a breakthrough yesterday morning when they apprehended the five suspects in Ekurhuleni townships on the East Rand.
Superintendent Eugene Opperman confirmed that the men are in police custody and will appear in court tomorrow.
Dube was murdered on Thursday night after he was accosted and shot by gunmen in Rosettenville, south of Johannesburg, while he had gone there to drop off two of his children at a relative's house.
"Police used evidence they gathered on the murder scene as well as an anonymous tip-off, to profile the suspects. Three men were arrested in Vosloorus, the fourth in Alberton and the fifth in Spruitview," he said.
"Several items were found in their possession and seized. Two handguns, four vehicles including the blue VW Polo allegedly used by the suspects on the day of the botched hijacking, were confiscated.
"The suspects have not been charged, but may face charges of murder, hijacking and being in possession of suspected stolen goods," added Opperman.
Dube, 43, was shot dead in what appeared to be a hijacking. The incident took place while he was dropping off his two teenage children, Thokozani and Nonkululeko at his brother's house.
Dube is survived by his wife, Zanele and seven children, Thokozani, Nonkululeko, Bongi, Laura, Siyanda, Philani, and Melokuhle.
A memorial service will be held at Bassline on Wednesday.
