Three men appeared briefly in the Roodepoort magistrate's court on Friday in connection with the murder of a Metro cop two months ago.

Jacques Kuipers, 34, a member of the Soweto crime prevention unit, was killed while waving down a vehicle in Meadowlands Zone 9, on September 18.

Michael Malanga, 25, George Taunyane, 27, and Mago Mamba, 29, appeared before Magistrate Roshen Bississar who referred their case to the regional court.

Bississar said the case was very serious.

Malanga is charged with culpable homicide and driving a stolen car. Two others, Taunyane and Mamba face charges of armed robbery and housebreaking.

Malanga told the magistrate that he was sentenced to six months imprisonment for housebreaking two years ago.

He still has a pending case of possessing an unlicensed firearm against him.

Malanga said he will appear in the Johannesburg magistrates' court today for the charge of possessing an unlicensed firearm.

Mamba said he was convicted and sentenced to 10 months imprisonment after he was caught with a stolen car. He has a pending case of rape, but told the magistrate that he could not remember when he would appear in court on that charge.

The three were arrested last week and police confiscated stolen goods valued at almost R500000 from them, said Gauteng police spokesman Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini.

Dlamini said Malanga had confessed to knocking down and killing Kuipers while driving in a stolen car. The officer later died.

Dlamini said the men were linked to a spate of robberies in Gauteng. Police recovered six plasma television sets, a decoder, four mini Hi-Fi, four DVD players, DVD cassettes, a computer, a loaded .22 revolver, an undisclosed amount of money and other household appliances.

The three will appear again in Roodepoort regional court on October 29 for bail application.
