Billy Madungandaba, the Gauteng councillor accused of being romantically involved with the wife of a Mpumalanga home affairs official, was on Friday charged with three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Madungandaba, a councillor in Rivonia, Johannesburg, appeared in the Mapulaneng magistrate's court but was not asked to plead. He will be back in court on November 8.

The allegations are that two weeks ago he drove to Mpumalanga to see his girlfriend, Vero Mgwenya, who is married to Jonathan Mathebula, in Thulamahashe.

When Mgwenya saw her husband sitting in his car a short distance from were she and Madungandaba where sitting, she wanted to leave. He prevented her from leaving and started to assault her.

Mathebula claims Madungandaba did not only assault him and his wife, but his younger brother James as well.

Madungandaba has, however, denied assaulting them and has instead laid counter-charges against the Mathebula brothers.
