Police in Vereeniging have appealed to residents in the Vaal and surrounding areas to help identify 10 bodies that have been lying in the government mortuary for more than a year.
Spokesman Captain Shado Mashobane said yesterday police wanted to finalise their investigations, but there was no information that could lead them to the dead people's relatives .
On February 25 last year, police found the body of a man who was run over by a car in Leeukuil Road, Duncanville. On October 22, another body was found at a park at the corner of Voortrekker and Smuts streets in Vereeniging.
The man had been stabbed.
Another body, with head injuries, was found in an open veld at Redan on November 25.
Police say there is another unidentified body of a man aged between 25 and 30 years, who died on December 21at Kopanong Hospital, Vereeniging, from multiple head injuries.
The body has "50 Cent" and "Thug Life" tattoos engraved on it .
On January 16 this year, police found the decomposed body of a man covered with a plastic refuse bag under a tree at an open veld in Ring Road, Arconpark.
Mashobane said police also found a human skeleton under a tree on May 4 along the Heidelberg Road. Next to the body were grey trousers and a cream-white shirt.
On May 12, the body of a man was found floating in the Vaal River at Dickinson Park. Five days later, that of another man was found under a tree on the Old Johannesburg Road.
An "unharmed" body of a man was found lying inside a train on May 22. On September 17, the body of a man was found lying next to a road in Redan. Next to the body was a bolt cutter.
Mashobane said: "In all cases, the addresses of the deceased are not known. Even their fingerprints, taken from them to determine their identity were unsuccessful."
He said anyone who misses a family member should go to Vereeniging police station.
