A 34-year-old man from Ulundi, in KwaZulu-Natal, is to appear in the Mahlabathini district court today charged with murdering his mother.

The man allegedly shot Andrietta Mthethwa, 67, to death while she was sleeping, it is believed, after an earlier argument.

The deceased's sister, who made the gruesome discovery, told police that when she visited her sister, her nephew "behaved strangely".

The sister, whose name police preferred to withhol at this stage, told police that on her arrival she had asked her nephew to let his mother that she had arrived, but the nephew had refused saying he was going to take a bath first.

Police spokesman Jay Naicker said the sister became suspicious when her nephew did not return.

She decided to go and check in the bedrooms herself, but her nephew was nowhere to be found.

"The sister discovered that the deceased was in bed in a pool of blood and had a single gun shot to the neck," said Naicker.

When police searched the rooms, they found a 9mm pistol with eight live rounds of ammunition.

Police were able to trace the deceased's son and he was arrested.

It was also established that the firearm found on the scene is illegal and had belonged to the suspect's deceased brother.

"The evidence we have against the deceased's son is substantial, and we suspect the firearm we found in the house is the murder weapon," said Naicker.

The incident has left the Makhazane community shocked.

Locals told the police they had not been aware of any bad blood between the deceased and her son.

"The locals suspect that the woman's son is responsible, saying it might have been the result of an argument that they had about something and the son did this shooting out of anger," said Naicker.
