A 19-year-old teenager who gave birth two days ago had to seek medical attention after she was allegedly assaulted by police yesterday.

The incident happened at Deleni area, near Nquthu, northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Phindile Mkhwanazi was taken to a doctor as she was bleeding profusely after she was allegedly beaten, kicked and shoved on top of her newborn baby by police looking for a firearm.

She said armed police in two cars arrived at their house.

"They asked my father for a gun and he showed them his licensed firearm, but they asked for another one."

The police then allegedly shoved her crippled father into the back of the police van when he said he did not have one.

"When my sister phoned, I told her that I recognised one of the policemen and they heard me and started assaulting me. I was kicked, beaten and shoved on top of my little girl," she said.
