Jilted and afraid to love

I am divorced with a son who I bring up on my own. My husband broke my heart and I swore no one would ever hurt me again. But a year later, I met a man who also broke my heart and since then I have been too scared to date. I've met a very nice man who wants to take the relationship further, but I can't seem to take the next step. My heart feels dead. I'm sure that sometimes he feels that I am a very cold person, but I just don't know how to open up to him. Is there something wrong with me? Should I end this relationship before he hurts me too?

Sad and confused, Orlando

Your heart is closed because of the hurt you have experienced. There is no time limit on how long it takes for our hearts to heal. You need help. Consider seeing a counsellor. If you end this relationship, you might miss out on a wonderful experience and possibly an amazing man who will love you. Unfortunately, this is the risk we take when we fall in love. Besides yourself, protect your child. The man in your life must have the best intentions towards you so that your child won't get hurt.
