The eight-year-old Limpopo girl who was allegedly locked up in her mother's house and raped for three days by her uncle has been admitted to hospital in Giyani with serious injuries to her genitals.

The 41-year-old uncle allegedly raped the girl since last Friday after finding the girl's mother, his sister, was not home.

The victim was sleeping with four of her siblings when their uncle arrived. He sent the other children away to look for their mother, who had allegedly gone out on a drinking binge with a boyfriend.

He then raped the young girl.

The Grade 1 pupil at a school near Modjadjiskloof was taken to a local district surgeon who confirmed that she had been raped.

Relatives of the girl told Sowetan that her genitals were seriously injured and needed urgent repair.

"The girl told the doctor she felt excruciating pains in her genitals, especially when she had to pass urine," said a relative whose name cannot be revealed to protect the identity of the victim.

The relative said the girl walked with difficulty after the assault.

A teacher at the school the child attends said the girl was to have sat for exams with the other pupils on Monday but did not show up.

They only learnt later about her ordeal.

"Her absence could affect her performance and we hope she recovers soon for the final examinations," the teacher said.

A ward councillor at the local village, Nelly Baloyi, said the victim's siblings would be taken to a place of safety until they finished writing their exams.

"We have also arranged an alternative place for them to stay after the exams," Baloyi said.

The suspect was arrested on Tuesday morning and charged with rape by the local magistrate's court. He was denied bail and remanded in custody until October 29.
