Fee hike protests cannot be wished away

The issue of fee increment creates an emotional reaction all over the country: ask Kader Asmal, who failed to deal with the way universities make money out of students.

Education Minister Naledi Pandor should not have been surprised when the UJ protests turned violent. Did she think the use of force would deter the comradely spirit? She was wrong.

The former RAU campus is currently being upgraded, with a mansion being built for the rector, while on some campuses students struggle to get access to computers to do their academic work.

Our opposition to the fee increment is legitimate and we will not be deterred by the spin doctor who mislead the public about what the university intends to do.

The education department should have been proactive a long time ago. The fee increment issues didn't start this year.

For the rector to build a mansion for himself as if he is going to be permanent in the university is uncalled for.

The construction of a parking lot rather than residences is another challenge.

The shortage of residences forces students to desperate in unsafe areas.
