Police spokesman Batlile Makole said yesterday that the group approach people at ATMs with a plastic bag containing R20 and R100 notes, which they offer to share with their victims if they follow them to a certain spot.
Men claiming to be policemen then show up and tell the victims that they saw them and other people on CCTV cameras carrying money in the plastic bag.
"These bogus policemen then order the ones who have been carrying the bag to have their fingerprints taken at a vehicle parked nearby," Makole said.
"Before they go, they are ordered to leave their cellphones and wallets with the victims at the ATMs. When the last conman's fingerprints have been taken, the bogus police detectives instruct the victims to do the same and leave their belongings, including their bank cards."
When the victims get to where the fingerprints are supposed to be taken, the "police vehicle" is nowhere to be found. - Sapa
