The SABC and the South African National Editors Forum will hold a conference on Friday to discuss issues pertaining to the South African media.

The "Media and Society Conference" will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The two topics to be discussed by a panel of speakers are:

l The rights to privacy and human dignity versus the right of expression in the South African context; and

l New threats to press freedom.

The organisers and speakers will hold a briefing at the same venue today.

The first topic will be interrogated by keynote speakers who include head of Rhodes University's School of Journalism Guy Berger and the Press Ombudsman Joe Thloloe.

The discussion panel and respondents will comprise Sowetan and Sunday World Editor-in- Chief Thabo Leshilo, SABC chief executive officer Dali Mpofu, author Suresh Roberts and Dumisani Hlophe of the Gauteng premier's office.

City Press editor Mathatha Tsedu will chair the discussions on the first topic.

The second topic will be chaired by SABC group news editor Snuki Zikalala.

Cherif Sy will be the keynote speaker.

Shokie Bopape Dlomo, Mail and Guardian chief executive Trevor Ncube, Elizabeth Barratt, Charlotte Mampane and chairman of the Native Club Muxe Nkondo are on the second panel.
