A payroll scam involving R885000 at the Eastern Cape health department has been uncovered, the department said yesterday.

"The bank account numbers of 98 employees were tampered with on the computerised payroll system," said spokesman Sizwe Kupelo. "As a result, a total of R885000 was illegally diverted into other bank accounts, and those employees did not receive their October salaries."

The department has vowed to bring the culprits to book. - Sapa
