An array of current and former top South African runners will invade Mohlakeng on Saturday for the inaugural West Rand Municipality Mampudi Community Challenge.
It will be a 16km road race, while there will also be a 4,8km fun run.
Daniel "Mampudi" Radebe, who is organising the race, said he was impressed by the support from some of the legendary athletes.
"From the old generation, we have big names like Matthews Temane, Lawrence Peu, Xolile Yawa and Zithilele Sinqe coming," he said. "It is great that Deon Brummer, Gert de Bruyn and Tom Varner, whom I used to compete against when I started my professional athletics career, will be there.
"Johan Fourie had indicated to us that he is committed elsewhere on Saturday," said Radebe, a former South African marathon champion.
Runners representing the current generation include Simon Mpholo, Josia Thugwane, Vincent Kutoane, Dimakatso Menong (formerly Morobi) and Michael Mpotoane.
"There are a number of South African-based Ethiopians who have confirmed their participation, it will be a great day of athletics," Radebe said.
"We will also use the challenge to launch Bokamoso bja Ramabelo Sports Foundation's logo. Members of the foundation include Peu, Thugwane, Menong and Temane."
Radebe said the race, which is expected to attract more than 2000 people, will start at 8am at Mohlakeng Stadium and finish at the same venue.
"I have discussed the issue of staging this race with Athletics South Africa bosses, president Leonard Chuene and Molatelo Malehopo."
