Two Grade 12 Mpumalanga pupils might miss their final examinations following the shooting of a policeman by one of them.

The murder suspect from the Mayibuye High School at the crime-ridden Daantjie Trust outside Nelspruit was wanted in connection with the killing of Father Allard 'Mako Omi, a renowned Roman Catholic Church priest.

Omi was shot dead when his car was hijacked in the area on Friday night.

Three police officers from KaNyamazane police station arrived at the school just before midday but a friend of the suspect quickly warned him about the SAPS' presence at the school.

"The suspect rushed out and fired shots at the police officers, injuring one of them in the leg," said Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane yesterday.

The gun-toting pupil jumped over the school fence and disappeared. The other two cops immediately arrested the other pupil - also in Grade 12 - who warned the suspect about their presence.

Constable Patrick Fakude, 28, is said to be in a stable but serious condition in Nelspruit Medi-Clinic.
