The Department of Education is confident that Grade 12 examinations will proceed without any major hitches.

Grade 12 pupils around the country started with their end-of-year examinations this week.

Yesterday, pupils around the country wrote their English second paper.

Gauteng education spokesman Kate Bapela said: "So far, we have not received any negative reports from schools."

She said the department did not expect to receive reports on cheating during the examinations. "We believe that our pupils are well-prepared for the exams and there is no need for them to cheat."

Bapela said no special security measures had been put in place for the exams.

"Teachers and the invigilators will ensure that there are no cases of dishonesty."
