Lira to set stage alight at Channel O music awards

Rhythm and song interpreted by colourful and captivating visuals, will be at the centre of the Channel O Spirit of Africa Music Video Awards.

Johannesburg is overjoyed following the convergence of stars from all parts of Africa who are here to celebrate and be celebrated, at the glittering ceremony that takes place at the Johannesburg City Hall tonight.

Set to blaze the stage alight, is South African Afro-soul singer, Lira. She has been nominated for the Best Female Video for her song Feel Good, which has also earned Lara Hollis a Best Director accolade to date.

Lira will step out among local boys like HHP and who come to the spotlight with the hit Tlhabane to Maftown, which has received four nominations, respectively.

Joining Lira is Gidi Gidi Maji Maji who have put Kenyan music on the map with their fusion of traditional music, rap and more.

Nigerian singer, songwriter and harmonica player and Best African West Video and Video of the Year nominee, D'Banj, is also set to ignite the stage at the awards ceremony.

Says Yolisa Phahle, Channel O's general manager: "What makes the Channel O Spirit of Africa Awards stand out is that they are voted for by fans across the continent. This year we've put music centre-stage by selecting some of Africa's top artists to be the main focus of the event's show."

Alongside Lira, Gidi Gidi Maji Maji and D'Banj will be a performance by Jozi, the group that's injected a fresh spark into Mzansi hip-hop with albums like Muthaland Crank.

Hotshot Durban-based kwaito artist L'Vovo has not only been nominated - he is also in the line-up. The Durbanite is a two-time nominee at the Channel O Awards and is in the running for Best Kwaito and Best Newcomer.

Fans and Channel O viewers, have until tomorrow night to vote by logging on to www.channelo.co.za, or SMS to 34622. SMS's are charged at international call rates.

The event will be broadcast live on Channel O on October 27, at 8pm.
