A 47-year-old father allegedly raped his own daughter telling her it would help her pass her end-of-year examinations.

Limpopo police yesterday arrested the man at his house minutes after the alleged rape.

A spokesman at the Maake police station, Matome Makgoba, said the girl told police that her father had told her he was "giving her good luck to pass her exams" when he raped her.

Makgoba said the 17-year-old girl had also claimed her father started raping her in 2000 when she was only nine years old.

"The girl was just about to go to school yesterday when the suspect, who was still in bed, called her to the house where he raped her. The girl's sister, whose name cannot be revealed to protect the identity of the victim, wanted to know about the visit. She told her sister that her father had raped her. When the mother came from work, she was told and reported the matter to the police," said Makgoba.

A teacher at the girl's school said she was often late and sometimes bunked classes. This led to her poor performance.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Naphuno magistrate's court today on a charge of rape.
