The turn of events in Taung is disappointing. Khutsong pupils and Taung residents are to blame for the mess.

The turn of events in Taung is disappointing. Khutsong pupils and Taung residents are to blame for the mess.

The pupils know that their relocation is to prepare for the upcoming exams. It was a huge sacrifice by their parents and the North West education department to create the camp.

The camp might not be ideal, but it's the best under the circumstances. It is sad that pupils chose to misuse the gift by indulging in activities that will adversely affect their studies. The stories of pupils drinking, if true, must be condemned strongly. The allegations must be investigated and the culprits reprimanded.

It is wrong to repay the kindness of Taung residents by spitting in their faces. It is wrong because the residents have been perfect hosts so far. But the response of some residents leaves much to be desired.

It makes one suspicious and ask if it is not a smoke screen to cover deeper resentment among residents about the perceived "special treatment" of pupils. I hope this is not the action of forces intent on destabilising the pupils' education.

With matric exams already under way, pupils need all the support they can get. We appeal to the people of Taung to find other ways of addressing their complaints and not to compromise pupils' right to write exams in a peaceful environment.

Remember, your child is my child too.
