Members of parliament Andrew Mlangeni and Bantu Holomisa will be among top golfers who will contest the yearly B3 Charity Day at Benoni Lake on October 31.

The two have been patrons of the event since it was established three years ago, raising funds for the KwaThema Stimulation Centre that houses mentally retarded children.

Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Duma Nkosi will grace the occasion and former world boxing champion Jacob "Baby Jake" Matlala will be one of the speakers.

Tournament organiser Mabina Mothibe said the event, which has been a success since it was established, is the brainchild of Matthews Mogafe, chairman of B3 Funeral Services.

"He came up with the idea of raising funds for the mentally retarded children and also to buy them a bus to transport them to and from their homes," said Mothibe.

Mogafe said: "Our target this year is between R150 000 and R250 000, the reason being that we've approached a number of companies to come on board. Some have responded positively and we're still waiting for others. We're also appealing to companies from the East Rand to help in this worthy cause. We need to help our people who are disadvantaged, to improve their lives."

Mogafe said they were expecting more than 30 business people from Zambia and Swaziland who have confirmed their participation in the event.

Mogafe said they had raised about R250000 in the past three years. Last year they raised R150 000 and the funds were divided between the centre and the Junior Golf Foundation of KwaThema.

"The funds assisted 20 youngsters to affiliate to the Springs Country Club and become fully-fledged members of the club."
