Traditional leaders and other high-profile people flocked to Nkomo, a rural village outside Giyani in Limpopo, to celebrate Culture and Heritage Day at the weekend.
Among those who attended the event on Saturday were chiefs and other traditional leaders from neighbouring countries such as Mozambique and Swaziland.
Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana and other senior politicians from Limpopo, including mayors and councillors, also attended.
The event was multi-cultural and the emphasis was on learning from others and sharing social and moral values to help improve the economic and social status of communities.
In true African tradition, the majority of those who graced the occasion were dressed in their various traditional attire.
The event was characterised by traditional dances and speeches, whose main theme was to encourage communities to observe their cultures.
Even the rain that fell throughout the proceedings, making roads in the area impassable, did not dampen the people's mood. The area was declared a national heritage site in 1999 where salt was discovered centuries ago.
Host Chief Khavhereni Aaron Mahumani urged communities to preserve their cultures as much as they could.
He said it was important that people practised their cultures and traditions and urged the youth to keep this spirit alive.
