In the light of recent developments hanging over national Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi's head, I think it's morally correct for him to resign or step aside until the matter is resolved.

The NPA has confirmed that an arrest warrant and a search and seizure warrant against Selebi were issued after thorough investigation.

President Thabo Mbeki called on people with evidence that Selebi has links with criminal syndicates to come forward. Well Mr President, now you have the proof. In case you don't know, South Africans are under siege from criminals while the Selebis' dine with Mafia bosses. Gangsters and drug lords rule our streets and you expect us to trust you when you shield your criminal drinking buddies.

It's disturbing to learn that Mbeki has allegedly intervened at least three times to protect Selebi from arrest. The Public Protector must investigate Mbeki and Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla on allegations of obstruction of justice and violation of the constitutionally entrenched principle of the separation of powers. We can't live in a country where the president and his cabinet abuse power and ignore the Constitution to dictate to organs of state to act against constitutional responsibility.
