The driver of the minibus taxi in which 12 school children were killed at the weekend has also died.

The death of Maxwell Makinta brings to 13 the number of people who died when he lost control of his minibus taxi, which overturned before bursting into flames.

The taxi was overloaded with 19 pupils from the OR Tambo High School in Moutse, Limpopo.

Twelve of the pupils died at the scene on Saturday afternoon.

The accident happened on the notorious Moloto Road in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga, while the pupils were on their way home after a trip to Gauteng. According to sources, the pupils' trip to The Fountains in Pretoria was unauthorised.

Makinta was transferred to the Mankweng Hospital, near Polokwane, together with two pupils. Five other pupils were admitted to the Philadelphia Hospital in Dennilton, Mpumalanga. Their conditions were yesterday described as satisfactory.

Phuti Seloba, spokesman for the Limpopo department of health and social development, said Makinta died on Sunday night.

"We can confirm that Makinta has died, probably as a result of the injuries he sustained in the accident," Seloba said.

He said the other two patients at Mankweng Hospital were still in critical conditions.
