If you fancy spoiling that someone special in your life, you can do a lot worse than pay a visit to the Pezula Private Estate situated in Knysna, Western Cape.

Situated on 600ha, Pezula is a combination of hotel and private residential sites and the resort has won a number of awards, including Most Environmentally Aware Development for 2007.

From the moment you enter the premises you know you are onto something special with the friendly, efficient way your booking is handled.

It's small things like this, the personal attention, that counts and Pezula has it down to a fine art. Nothing is too great or too small for the staff at the resort.

After reading recently about the shoddy treatment my colleague Amanda Ngudle received at an establishment in Mabopane, Pretoria, it is reassuring to know that some hotels still know how to treat guests.

The one-bedroom unit that was mine for a night looked like something straight off the pages of an interior decor magazine.

The bedroom-lounge was tastefully decorated in light pastels with an en suite bathroom containing a large stand-alone bath and enormous shower.

Being a cool evening, it was also nice to have the fireplace lit before dinner so you return to a lovely, warm room later.

Whether you decide to play a round of golf on the resident course or a game of tennis on one of four all-weather courts, the hotel spa is definitely the place to unwind afterwards.

Straight away you are transported to another world with soothing music, running fountains and a serenity all of its own.

On offer are an array of services . facials, pedicures, manicures, sun bed, hair salon and so on.

With not much time before dinner, I opted for a 30-minute neck and back massage followed by 15 minutes on a water bed.

The massage was relaxing and invigorating.

Using a variety of oils, it was an ideal way to ease away the stresses of city life.

The water bed was an interesting experience.

The bed itself is made of a thin rubber filled with water which is then blasted with air jets.

These jets make their way up and down your body and leave you feeling slightly tingly and rested.

If you have a bit more time, a gym, indoor heated pool and sauna are just waiting to be used - all at no extra cost to guests.

Zachary's was our spot for a bit of late-night dining and the food didn't disappoint.

Giving the starter a miss, I opted for a main course of Karoo lamb which came with mashed potatoes and braised asparagus.

As you expect from an establishment such as this, the food - accompanied by a selection of red and white wines - was prepared to perfection.

There is no doubt Pezula is something special.

Sportsmen owning property there include tennis world number-one Roger Federer, along with golfing great Ernie Els and national cricket captain Graeme Smith.

Pezula maintains its exclusivity with fantastic facilities, a staff that is trained and prepared to go the extra mile for its guests and a price tag that would have even Richard Branson checking his bank balance after a stay.
