A 20-year-old man appeared briefly on a murder charge in the Protea magistrate's court yesterday.

Vusi Radebe is facing a murder charge after he allegedly strangled his grandmother, Anastacia Radebe, 83, a month ago. The grandmother died at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital on Friday.

It is alleged that Vusi attacked his grandmother and other siblings in their home in Zondi, Soweto.

"We believe that he was bewitched. Vusi would never do that. He is a good child," his aunt, Deliwe Radebe, said.

Deliwe told Sowetan that Vusi had previously been admitted to hospital for mental observation.

He will appear in court again on October 30.
