The Eastern Cape education department has vowed to root out corruption within its ranks.
This follows the arrest of three people accused of corruption. The three, who include a department official, have been arrested by members of the Mthatha Commercial Crimes Unit.
They were arrested after the appointment of a forensic audit company, Deloitte & Touche, to investigate alleged irregularities within various functional areas in the department and four of its districts.
"They were arrested and charged with several counts of corruption and fraud in the Maluti district," said communications director of the department, Mzukisi Ndara.
According to Deloitte & Touche, "irregularities have been uncovered during the investigations, and more arrests are imminent".
The three appeared in the Maluti district court last week. The departmental official was granted bail of R10000, while the other two were granted bail of R20000 each.
"The arrests of the three happened against the backdrop of a concerted effort to restore dignity, financial accountability and confidence in the department of education," added Ndara.
