It was a good day for Ithuteng Trust founder Jackey Maarohanye when she was acquitted on public violence charges at the Protea magistrate's court in Soweto on Friday.
Maarohanye, fondly known as Mama Jackey, was found not guilty on charges of public violence, malicious damage to property, housebreaking and theft. The charges were that on October 7 last year, Maarohanye led her pupils on a march and barricaded the Old Potchefstroom road in Soweto. They pelted police with stones.
The students were protesting against police failure to act against a person they alleged set fire to their school.
The students then went to Victor Mohale's home in Tladi, where a house was torched and property damaged.
On Friday, Magistrate Corne Volschenk found that although 14 people testified in the case, there was no substantial evidence to link Maarohanye to the acts of violence committed on the day.
He said none of the witnesses could prove that she participated in any form of violence.
