It might be early to make predictions, but Maritzburg United have selected themselves as favourites to win the Coastal Stream of the National First Division (NFD).

The Ian Palmer-coached side made their intentions of an early return to the Premiership known when they walloped debutantes Hanover Park 3-1 in their league clash at Vygieskraal Stadium in the Western Cape at the weekend.

United now lead the pack with six points from two matches after winning their season opener against Western Province United 1-0 at home a fornight ago.

Park held FC Cape Town to a 1-all draw in their opening match in the Mother City.

Though Farouk Kadodia, United's boss, has refused to admit that his charges have the potential to win promotion at the end of the season, many pundits have tipped the KwaZulu-Natal side to succeed in their maiden campaign in the NFD.

But he is on record saying they are ready to overcome obstacles in the NFD.

Indeed, United have quality players who can help the club to return to top-flight football.

Those players include Collen Zimba, Godfrey Doboro and Lynch Pule.

While United are unbeaten this season, their home boys from KwaZulu-Natal, Durban Stars, are still to shine this term.

Stars are without a win in two matches after dropping two valuable points at home this past weekend. They drew 1-1 against FC Cape Town at Chatsworth Stadium.

Western Province United and Nathi Lions battled to a scoreless stalemate in Wynberg in Cape Town and Bay United and Ikapa Sporting also drew 0-0 in Port Elizabeth.

Inland Stream promotion hopefuls University of Pretoria, alias AmaTuks, beat newcomers African Warriors 2-1 in Pretoria.

The match between FC AK and Dynamos at Eldorado Park on Saturday was postponed because of a water-logged pitch.

Andrew Dipela, Premier Soccer League's general manager, said they would decide on a new date for the affected matches.
