A 25-year-old man accused of raping his mother appeared in the KwaMsane magistrate's court on Friday.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his mother, was arrested last week at their home in KwaMsane, northern Zululand, in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to the police, the accused is mentally ill and had made it a habit to rape his mother.

The woman was too embarrassed to report the abuse to the police.

It took his concerned siblings to report the matter to the local health clinic, and the police were alerted.

The case was postponed for the suspect to acquire an attorney for his defence.

l In a separate incident, 19-year-old Khensani Ubisi of Kumani village, near Thulamahashe, briefly appeared in the Mhala magistrate's' court in Mpumalanga on Friday.

She was not asked to plead on charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

She allegedly bit off part of 16-year-old Nikiwe Ndlovu's lower lip during a fight over a boyfriend on September 13.

The matter was postponed to October 26 for trial.
