Samwu cries foul over ruling

Striking municipal workers should forget about protesting and instead start improving service delivery, the Johannesburg City said yesterday.

Striking municipal workers should forget about protesting and instead start improving service delivery, the Johannesburg City said yesterday.

The Labour Court had earlier ruled in the city's favour and prevented the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) from embarking on a secondary strike.

City spokesman, Gabu Tugwana, said he did not want to boast about their victory, and stressed that it was time the strikers went back to work and start delivering.

"All we know is that the court has spoken and now it's time for workers to concentrate on improving service delivery for the taxpayers."

Union spokesman, Dumisani Langa, said they were disappointed with the ruling, but that they would map a new way forward once they have heard the reasons why the court ruled against them.

Judge Annelie Basson said she would present the reasons for her ruling today at 2pm. Fifty percent of the protesting city employees were from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department.

The disgruntled workers are demanding free transport to and from work on municipal buses, salary parity for employees with the same experience and qualifications, an end to the casualisation of jobs, and the introduction of fixed-term contracts for lower-end employees. - Sapa
