Eight new clinics were officially launched in the Mqanduli area (former Transkei) by Eastern Cape health MEC Nomsa Jajula yesterday.

Her spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the clinics, which are already operational and are fully-equipped and staffed, had cost R24million.

One of the clinics, Zidindi, will also be used as a training facility for medical students from the Walter Sisulu University, and would have telemedicine facilities.

Kupelo said five other clinics were under construction in the area.

The clinic programme was part of the province's focus on primary health care, and its bid to reduce the long queues in hospitals through a referral system. - Sapa
