Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang will make her debut in soccer during the 2010 Fifa World Cup Local Organising Committee health workshop in Galeshewe this weekend.
Tshabalala-Msimang will present the government's 2010 Fifa World Cup health guarantees and its support of the healthcare activities.
It will be officially opened by Northern Cape Premier Dipuo Peters and will also be attended by prominent local and global sports medicine practitioners.
Organised by the LOC, Fifa and department of health, the workshop will deal with health, medical and doping control matters in the sport.
It will take place tomorrow and Sunday at the newly established Mayibuye Sports Science Institute in Galeshewe.
The workshop will be conducted by Michel D'Hooghe, Fifa sports medicine committee chairman; Jiri Dvorak, Fifa chief medical officer; and Victor Ramathesele, the LOC's general medical officer and a member of the Fifa sports committee.
D'Hooghe will deal with Fifa's strategy in the fight against doping, while Dvorak will speak on Fifa's football for health in Africa programme. He will also touch on Fifa's out-of-competition and in-competition doping control procedures.
Ramathesele will give an overview of the LOC's medical plans at the 2010 World Cup venues and headquarters.
The institute is an initiative of the Northern Cape government where all the scientific methods to identify and develop sporting talent are employed. It also encourages sport and exercise as a health management tool.
Danny Jordaan, LOC chief executive, said the workshop will be an important milestone and will be a good opportunity for top local medical practitioners to constructively engage with their Fifa counterparts.
"We are pleased with the preparations of the medical team of the Local Organising Committee in South Africa so far and look forward to working with these distinguished colleagues," said Dvorak.
