Taxi cabs offer 24-hour service

Obakeng "Bux" Molatedi, Safa national executive member, is delighted that the taxi industry in Mangaung (Bloemfontein) is operating 24 hours.

Obakeng "Bux" Molatedi, Safa national executive member, is delighted that the taxi industry in Mangaung (Bloemfontein) is operating 24 hours.

"This augurs well for our preparations for the 2010 World Cup. We are more than ready for the thousands of tourists," said Molatedi.

The taxis that Molatedi is referring to are maroana, the five-seater sedans operating in Mangaung and surrounding townships.

"We have a 24-hour taxi business. I think we are the only city in South Africa offering such a service to the locals.

"We all know that most of the areas in South Africa have minibuses operating until 7pm, except for those operating only in the cities.

"That is why it is so easy for people who arrive in the city at any time of the night to get to their homes in the township," said Molatedi.

His utterances came after Joe Mafereka, Free State 2010 World Cup political champion, urged the taxi industry in the area to gear themselves up for 2010.

Mafereka was speaking at the Sowetan Extra Time in Mangaung last Thursday, a monthly social gathering co-hosted by Famous Grouse and e.tv .

Mafereka said drivers who want to be part of the World Cup must be taught to speak at least five languages.

He said the drivers will also be trained in customer care.
