Johannesburg municipal workers have given the mayor Amos Masondo and his council until next Wednesday to accede to their wage demands or face a "massive" strike.
The SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) yesterday handed a memorandum listing workers demands to the Johannesburg Metro Council.
They then warned they would take industrial action by Wednesday next week if there was no positive response.
Samwu's Johannesburg branch secretary Dumisani Langa told about 3000 workers at the council's premises that the union would embark on a full-blown strike if the City of Johannesburg did not respond to the demands, which include:
l Part-time workers be paid the same salary as permanent workers with the same experience;
l All workers be eligible for salary increases after a year;
l Workers be provided with free transport to and from work and;
l Do away with casual staff.
Meanwhile, Samwu has lodged an application in the labour court to go on a full-scale strike.
Langa said: "We are awaiting the outcome tomorrow (today)."
City of Johannesburg director of communications Gabu Tugwana and spokesman Nthatisi Modingoane were unavailable for comment.
