It is that time of the year when Durban will be stealing the literature limelight by hosting the popular Poetry Africa.
This time around, music features strongly as part of the cultural mix that Poetry Africa has become over the years. It is organised by the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Centre for Creative Arts.
Poetry Africa features 20 poets from 10 countries for an exhilarating roller-coaster of words, rhythms, and ideas. It started on October 1 and ends on Saturday, October 6.
Maloya maestro, Danyel Waro from Reunion, is in South Africa on his first visit. He is accompanied by Laurent Dalleau, Damien Mandrin and Vincent Phileas playing traditional island percussion instruments.
Waro gives a must-see performance tomorrow at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at 7.30pm.
The beautifully voiced mbira player Chiwoniso from Zimbabwe and winner of Unesco's Prize for Arts, Kora nominee and front woman of the popular Vibe Culture, released her first solo album, Ancient Voices, to global critical acclaim. She has worked with the voices of Marie Boine, Kris Kristofferson and Sinead O'Connor on a CD for world peace to honour the Nobel Peace Prize Award's 100th commemoration.
Durban legend Syd Kitchen and the prolific young Korean-American Ishle will perform on Friday at the Sneddon.
