Flexicell fleecing us, say angry consumers

Gomo said Flexicell debited his account for two years, without his consent or knowledge.

He said that he had not signed a contract with the company because he already had one with Vodacom.

Gomo is one of 20 consumers with the same problem. Consumers said they were enticed to pay a once-off R99 subscription fee for discounted airtime worth R140 for R130.

In most cases, Flexicell debited accounts for twice as much, and did not load the discounted airtime. Frustrated consumers said they kept calling Flexicell without success.

After Consumer Line helped Edward Pheme last month, we received lots of complaints.

Flexicell could not trace some of the complaints we had referred for investigation, but a few people were refunded.

Affected consumers' woes:

l Johanna Thobane's misery started four years ago when Flexicell deducted R295 from her account and did not load her airtime. She is awaiting her R13275 refund that Flexicell had debited from her account.

l Emanuel Ntomane has tried for two years to cancel his account after monthly instalments were debited twice for no service. Flexicell owes him R5200, he said.

l Peter Mabena claims that Flexicell owes him R4142, that the company withdrew over 19 months.

l Cyril Zulu discovered in August that Flexicell had been debiting his bank account without his permission or knowledge since 2005. He was refunded his R2000 after Consumer Line's intervention.

l Emmarentia Botha will finally sleep easy. Her nightmare ended last Saturday when Flexicell activated her SIM card and cancelled a contract for which she did not apply. Flexicell has undertaken to refund her after Consumer Line intervened.

l Kabelo Dlamini said Flexicell had milked him for more than two years, but his worries ended last Thursday when the company refunded his R1600.

l Mabule Modida has been paying R49 to Flexicell since 2004 for airtime he has never received. He wants his R2205 back.

l Mandla Sithole said Flexicell sent him airtime intermittently, even though he paid his bill regularly. They also refused to cancel his contract, he claimed.

l Nonyaniso Buthelezi is also battling to get back R1345 that has been debited since February.

l Phillemon Masale claims Flexicell owes him more that R900.

l Isaac Mokhosi wants Flexicell to stop sending him airtime and deducting his money.

l Lydia Selebalo claims that she never authorised Flexicell to debit her account. She wants her money back.
