Call to use more public transport

As part of the preparations for the 2010 World Cup, the Gauteng provincial government has urged community members to use public transport.

As part of the preparations for the 2010 World Cup, the Gauteng provincial government has urged community members to use public transport.

This was said by MEC for public transport, roads and works, Ignatius Jacobs at the launch of the provincial Public Transport Month campaign on Monday.

The campaign was launched under the theme: "Better transport for 2010 and beyond".

Jacobs also unveiled a booklet calling on all sectors of society to work on building an accessible, user-friendly and safe public transport system.

The MEC said the booklet is aimed at promoting the use of public transport by demystifying negative perceptions that commuters have on the quality of public transport in the province.

"It is important to address lack of safety, poor customer service, inconvenience, unroadworthy vehicles, unethical behaviour, bad driving and violation of traffic regulations by taxi drivers as well as taxi wars," added Jacobs.
