KwaZulu-Natal MEC for local government, housing and traditional affairs, Mike Mabuyakhulu, has called for the blacklisting of errant senior finance officers who are jumping from one municipality to another.

Mabuyakhulu was addressing mayors, municipal managers and finance officers from all 61 municipalities in the province during the budget week at Empangeni, on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast yesterday.

He said finance managers guilty of maladministration and poor governance were jumping from one municipality to another.

Mabuyakhulu said "by jumping ship" they wreaked financial havoc in municipalities across the country.

A national database of "errant municipal finance officers" should be compiled with immediate effect, he said.

He called on the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) to consider his blacklisting request. He said he would also raise the issue with the Forum of Local Government MECs soon.
