A Booysens police inspector who was arrested last year following an investigation including corruption and extortion will appear in the Johannesburg magistrate's court this week.

The policeman, who is in his 40s, faces charges of corruption, extortion, intimidation and defeating the ends of justice.

This happened after the police received complaints from the community about police officers who went around Johannesburg taking money from people, intimidating them and offering them cars in exchange for cash.

Booysens police station anti-hijack unit head Superintendent Gregory Beck said the officer will stand trial on Thursday.

Beck said: "He was a member of a task team set up to protect the community. His arrest has resulted in more corrupt officers being uncovered. More arrests will follow."
