A nurse was shocked when she found an abandoned baby in a toilet at Mofolo clinic, Soweto, yesterday.

Wearing a cream-white romper, white hat and wrapped in a brown towel, the baby was strategically placed for someone to find him.

Moroka police spokesman Nokuzola Mashaba said: "He looks fine and healthy. He had no scratch marks or bruises to suggest that he was hurt."

Police said it was suspected the mother left home pretending to take the baby to the clinic and dumped him in the toilet.

Constable Tirhani Maluleke, co-ordinator of trauma centre in the police station, said the baby was taken to Johannesburg Child Welfare centre where he would be kept until his mother was found. - Mfundekelwa Mkhulisi
