The Department of Social Development has committed itself to implementing the Older Persons' Act of 2006 aimed at protecting elderly people.
Minister Zola Skweyiya said his department was spending R1million in the implementation of the act. He spoke during the launch of the International Day of Older Persons at Rabali Stadium in Limpopo yesterday where thousands of elderly people gathered to commemorate this globally celebrated event.
He said the act was being implemented and service providers trained to dispense a safer service to the elderly.
He hoped that personnel in the public service and in civil society in general would be fully trained by the end of the year. The act would help stop the abuse of the elderly and provide better service to cater for their needs.
Skweyiya said plans were also at an advanced stage to initiate Older Persons' Forums in order to create "a meaningful participation in the national and social process development policy".
The minister further called for the speeding up of processes to introduce technology that would do away with queues so as to safeguard pensioners at places where they received their grants.
