Jomo Sono and Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel are right: anybody who is behind the suggested payment of commission to soccer officials who negotiate sponsorship deals must be stopped.

Jomo Sono and Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel are right: anybody who is behind the suggested payment of commission to soccer officials who negotiate sponsorship deals must be stopped.

Manuel in fact told Absa boss Steve Booysen that the bonus to the negotiators of the R500000 sponsorship for the PSL smacks of bribery.

Surprisingly, most PSL clubs are silent on the matter. Small wonder someone suggested they need a lesson in corporate governance.

Traditionally, elected officials get honorariums. As for former PSL chief executive Trevor Phillips - why was he paid millions a year if not to make the game more profitable?

Indeed, soccer needs more Sonos to halt greed in the corridors of power.
