With the clock fast ticking towards the 2010 World Cup, South Africa's railway network is to undergo a revamp before the soccer spectacle.
Speaking at the opening of a multimillion-rand international pier at OR Tambo International Airport and the launch of October Transport Month yesterday, Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said express services will be widely introduced to promote public transport.
"I am aware that express services will be introduced between Johannesburg and Tshwane, in Cape Town as well as eThekwini region," said Radebe.
He also said the express service will be used to transport visitors to the World Cup games to be held at the FNB stadium as well as Loftus in Tshwane.
Radebe also said the canned monorail service between Soweto and Johannesburg might make a comeback because cabinet was looking into the project.
The South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC) will reconstruct the train station next to FNB stadium and will also build a station next to the new Orlando stadium in Soweto.
"The SARCC will also upgrade stations such as Langlaagte, New Canada, Naledi as well as the Doornfontein-Ellis Park stations," Radebe said.
According to Radebe this was all part of the RailPlan approved by cabinet last year.
