An array of top South African runners will invade Polokwane on Saturday to participate in the 20km Nedbank Matha Series.
It is one of the nine 20km events taking place in various parts of the country as part of Athletics South Africa's plan to create awareness of the sport.
The last leg of the series will form part of the Soweto Marathon on November 4.
Leonard Chuene, ASA president, said yesterday they will be pleased to have more than 4 000 people participating in the race.
"We are excited that Polokwane is now part of the Matha Series. It will be the first one there and we expect great support," he said.
"It is also good for the city, which is one of the host cities for the 2010 World Cup, that we as ASA are fully behind the country's preparations.
"Our head office has been in touch with Athletics Limpopo and all the necessary logistics arrangements have been put in place.
"The good thing about it is that the majority of top athletes in South Africa are from Limpopo," said Chuene, who is also from Limpopo.
Some of the current stars from Limpopo include Hendrick Ramaala, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, Violet Raseboya, Johannes Kekana, Abner Chipu and Daniel Radebe.
Legends from the area include Titus Mamabolo, Gibeon Moshaba, Peter Ngobeni, Rammy and David Tsebe, Vincent Kekana as well as Ben Choeu.
Saturday's race will start at 7am at the Peter Mokaba Stadium and also finish at the same venue.
As is the tradition, there will also be a 5km fun run, which incorporates the Schools Challenge, Chuene said.
