Finance Minister Trevor Manuel will not back down on his call for Absa Bank's chief executive Steven Booysen to do the right thing and not pay bonuses to soccer bosses for landing one of the country's biggest sports deals.

Manuel's spokesman Thoraya Pandy told Sowetan yesterday that Manuel insists that Absa consider whether it is right to pay R50million commission to soccer officials for simply doing their jobs. Absa last week announced a R500million deal over five years for professional soccer.

"The minister says the ethical issue remains. These officials have been selected to serve the interests of their organisations and not for personal enrichment," said Pandy. She said the size of the commission was an issue considering the need for the development of soccer in the country.
