Forget the West and fix Zimbabwe

Simon Moyo has to defend his boss Robert Mugabe ('We Shall Overcome' on September 27). After all, he needs a job and therefore has to fulfil his obligations.

Simon Moyo has to defend his boss Robert Mugabe ('We Shall Overcome' on September 27). After all, he needs a job and therefore has to fulfil his obligations.

His role is to sell a specific agenda. Many of us look on with concern and despair, despite his spin-doctoring for the Mugabe hegemony.

It is true that the SADC has proved its immutable support for Mugabe. But this does not mean that the SADC is right. In fact, President Thabo Mbeki has sold his Nepad principles.

Mbeki, the architect for good governance, has demonstrated irreverence for the plight of Africa. And he rules South Africa with the same ambivalence.

The opposition is funded by the West, Moyo says. Where else must it find money if that of Zimbabwe has no value? Besides, the country needs foreign currency.

Zimbabwe's success does not equate with that of Mugabe. He had 27 years to achieve it. Pan Africanism is not the answer. It is ideal for African identity, not for holistic success.

Moyo wastes energy arguing against the West rather than pursuing success at home. It's not about how many Zimbabweans there are in South Africa - they are everywhere and remain Zimbabwe's assets.
