Three Orange Farm, Vaal, men who allegedly gang-raped and murdered a 23-year-old woman appeared in the Vereeniging magistrate's court yesterday.

Elias Mandlati, 20, Sello Dintso, 29, and Simphiwe Khumalo, 25, made their second brief appearance in court before their case was postponed to October 5 for a formal bail application.

The three men allegedly raped and killed Sibongile Maphumulo, 23, in Poortjie, outside Orange Farm, on August 26. They allegedly took Maphumulo from Orange Farm, where they were drinking, to Poortjie, where they raped and strangled her.

The three then left her half-naked body in the veld where it was found on August 28. It is believed that Maphumulo once dated Mandlati before their affair turned sour. Mandlati and Dintso have appointed their own lawyers while Khumalo opted to be defended by a lawyer from the Legal Aid Board.

Last year, Mandlati, Khumalo and Dumisani Tisana were arrested for allegedly hijacking a car and killing their friend, Trevor Ntombela, by throwing him off the moving vehicle on the Golden Highway.

But the case was struck off the roll for lack of evidence.
