The KwaZulu-Natal government and the provincial department of transport have engaged the help of tavern owners to curb the escalating road deaths in the province.
According to MEC for transport, community safety and liaison, Bheki Cele, tavern operators should ensure that drunken patrons do not drive their cars.
It has also been requested that taverners provide shuttles to take drunk patrons home or provide places where the inebriated can sleep overnight.
Cele said the province was serious about the clampdown on reckless drivers.
At the weekend alone, eight drunken drivers were arrested.
"We can't be complacent about what is happening in our areas.
"Tavern owners need to play their role in curbing road carnage. Statistics show that most road accidents are a result of drunken driving," said Cele.
He said last weekend alone, 34 people died on the province's roads.
"Between Monday and Friday, we lost 34 lives, and these are not just statistics, it's human beings. And all these accidents could have been prevented."
